What is 3D Secure (3DS)?

3D Secure, also known as payer authentication, is a security protocol which helps to protect online card payments from fraud. From 1st June 2021, services that process online card payments must comply with the new regulation for Strong Customer Authentication (SCA).

What does this mean for me?

You may be asked to complete an extra verification step with your bank before checking out with Phlo. This may include:

  • Fingerprint verification

  • Passcode verification

  • SMS (text) verification

When will I need to authenticate?

Banks use contextual data (delivery address, previous transaction history etc) to decide whether they require a user to perform an extra verification step or not.

If you are required to enter additional verifications, you will see the following in the Phlo app:

*Please note, this may vary across different banking providers

Exemptions

Some payments may be exempt from 3DS. This may include:

  • Low value transactions (under £30)

  • Low risk transactions where the Payment Service Provider (PSP) has low levels of risk across their platform

  • Corporate payments (unless the card name is registered with an individual)

If you encounter any problems upon checkout, please get in touch with us via live-chat and we will be delighted to help you.
